Overview

An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a test that records the electrical activity of the heart.

EKGs detect heart rhythm abnormalities, heart attacks, heart muscle damage, and other cardiac conditions.

Small electrodes are placed on the chest, arms, and legs. The machine records the heart's electrical activity over a few minutes.

No special preparation is needed. Wear comfortable clothing that can be easily removed.

Abnormal results may indicate arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, hypertrophy, or other heart conditions.
